Fun fact: Kanopolis State Park is the first state park in Kansas, and if you love exploring caves, this is the destination for you. More adventure awaits here, including witnessing the canyons and 50-foot bluffs along the Horsethief Canyon Trail to Red Rock Canyon Loop. The rugged terrain is a playground for hikers who want to see one of the most diverse landscapes in the Smoky Hills region of the state.

The 6-mile trail combines Horsethief Canyon and Red Rock Canyon, so you can choose your adventure here. Since this is a multi-use trail, it’s popular for horseback riding, yet it’s an adventurous trek for hikers, too. You’ll weave through flat prairie land, several creek crossings, and eventually meander through the canyons formed millions of years ago from erosion.

There will be obstacles to conquer on this challenging route, so I highly suggest you’re prepared for them. Wear waterproof shoes in case the creek levels are higher than normal. Horseback riders should have no issues with the water levels, but hikers should avoid this trail after heavy downpours. Luckily, several spots have down logs to make it easier to navigate across the waterways. The terrain is sandy and rocky in sections, and there is a 600-foot elevation gain. Of course, this means you’ll have plenty of overlooks to stop and take in the expansive views of the area.

As you trek through the Horsethief section of the trail, you’ll have lots of opportunities to explore the caves and venture off-trail to see the side canyons. The gorges and craggy rocks here are well-defined, but the colors are less muted than the canyons on the Red Canyon section of the hike.
On the second (more challenging) leg of the trail, prepare to be in awe at the deep hues of the rocks and hoodoo-style spires along the way. With some imagination, you’ll believe the mind-blowing formations resemble the rocky terrain of the Southwestern parts of Utah.

The contrast of the red rocks against the grasslands makes this hike truly unique to Kansas, and you’ll want to have your camera to snap pics for your collection. Avid hikers, depending on possible creek detours, carve out about 4 hours (or more) for this adventure. If you’re hiking during the warmer season, pack enough water, bug spray, and sunscreen, too.
Keep your eyes open for the wildlife, including beavers along the waterways, deer, and various birds that call the area home. Unfortunately, due to the water crossing and obstacles on this hike, the kids and dogs must sit this one out. The good news is, if you’re a solo hiker and enjoy solitude as you explore the remote wilderness, this unforgettable canyon hike in Kansas is for you.

Before I forget, here’s one last suggestion: AllTrails+ will be extremely useful for this hike, especially when it comes to navigating around the creek crossings. Having offline maps on this trail is a huge saving grace.
