What was your first job:
My first job was as a Construction Laborer, where I helped build barns and shops. The summer after my sophomore year of high school, I took on a unique job—harvesting honey in a commercial honey and beekeeping operation.

What got you interest in this industry:
My passion for the outdoors and fond memories of hunting, fishing, and camping with my grandparents sparked my initial interest. Later, during my eight years as a County Commissioner, I oversaw the County park system, which gave me a deeper understanding of park operations and the business side of managing public spaces. That experience truly solidified my interest in this field.

What are you most looking forward to in the coming year?
I’m most excited about continuing to grow alongside my team. We have a passionate and dedicated group that is committed to professional development and continuously working to create more meaningful experiences for our visitors. In the coming year, we’ll be establishing a State Park Foundation and entering our first year with an Office of Outdoor Recreation. These exciting milestones will play a key role in enhancing our programs and expanding our impact.

Any exciting projects you are working on that you would like to share?
We have so many exciting projects underway right now, it’s hard to choose just one. One of the biggest is the creation of a new state park—the first in North Dakota since the late 1980s. We’re thrilled to be working on Pembina Gorge State Park, which is slated to open in late 2025. It’s a significant milestone for the state, and we can’t wait to share it with the public.

What do you enjoy about the outdoors in your state?
What I love most about North Dakota's outdoors is the incredible diversity of landscapes and recreational opportunities. From the rugged Badlands and expansive prairie plains to the forests of the northeast, there’s a landscape and experience to suit every interest and passion.

Highlight one or two state parks in North Dakota and why we should visit.

Two of North Dakota's standout state parks are Fort Abraham Lincoln and Fort Stevenson. Fort Abraham Lincoln, established in 1907, is the oldest in the state. Visitors can explore the history of the Mandan Native Americans, tour reconstructed earthlodges, and step into the past at the old fort and frontier barracks. The park also offers scenic hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, as well as camping and fishing along the Missouri and Heart Rivers.

Fort Stevenson State Park, located on the north shore of Lake Sakakawea, features stunning views, a variety of trails, and outdoor rental equipment. It’s a top spot for boating and fishing, with marinas and boat rentals available. The park also hosts events and showcases North Dakota's natural beauty.

If I was a visitor, what would be the top three things you’d show me?
If you visited the great state of North Dakota, the top three places I’d show you would be the famous Badlands, Lake Sakakawea, and the Pembina Gorge State Park. First, the Badlands, located along the western edge of the state, are home to what’s known as the 'cradle of conservation.' We have two incredible state parks here that are perfect for backcountry exploration. Next, I’d take you to Lake Sakakawea, the third-largest man-made reservoir in the nation, which offers fantastic opportunities for water recreation. Three of our state parks are situated along its shores. Finally, I’d show you Pembina Gorge State Park, our newest and hidden gem. With its towering valley cliffs, isolated prairies, wetlands, and the largest continuous, undisturbed forest in North Dakota, the natural beauty of this park is unmatched, offering an exceptional outdoor experience.

Most memorable moment(s) in your career?
The most unforgettable moment in my career came during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Pembina Gorge State Park. We invited local youth to participate in the ceremonial shovel turning, symbolizing that this park is being developed not only for today but for future generations. It was an inspiring reminder of how we are preserving and cultivating a passion for outdoor heritage and culture for years to come.

What’s the most motivational/inspiring thing anyone has ever said to you?
While I don’t have one specific piece of advice that stands out, I am deeply inspired by my parents’ unwavering work ethic and constant support. I’m also continually motivated by North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum’s passion for the outdoors and his dedication to serving our citizens. His commitment to both the environment and the community resonates with me and fuels my own drive.

Share a few fun facts about yourself.
I’m passionate about the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing. Recently, I’ve been spending more time hunting since prime fishing season coincides with our busiest camping months. I’m also a big fan of classic cars and trucks and spend time restoring them. I have a small collection that I try to drive as often as possible. In addition, I’m an avid reader with two books on the go at once—one for entertainment and one for personal or professional growth. Right now, I’m reading The Loves of Theodore Roosevelt by my friend Edward O’Keefe, and Trust and Inspire by Stephen Covey. When I do get some free time, I love watching my niece and nephews play sports—baseball, football, and swimming—and I’m always up for traveling. Next on the list? Germany!
