Impact of Hurricane Helene on Tennessee State Parks

Nov 26, 2024

During the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Tennessee State Parks Rangers were activated by the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency to provide critical response to communities in Northeast Tennessee and deployed self-sustaining, rapid-response operation teams.

Due to the impacts of the storm, four Tennessee State Parks located in northeast Tennessee were forced to temporarily close: Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in Elizabethton, Roan Mountain State Park in Roan Mountain, Rocky Fork State Park in Flag Pond, and David Crockett Birthplace State Park in Limestone. All parks besides David Crockett Birthplace State Park have now partially reopened.

David Crockett Birthplace was significantly impacted, and the property damage is extensive. Tennessee State Parks has begun the initial process for master planning the park, which will require extensive planning and resources. Supporting community recovery remains a top priority and we are eager to see David Crockett Birthplace returned as a thriving park for local residents and as an enticing destination for visitors from across Tennessee and beyond.
