Contemporary Native Americans have a unique relationship with the United States and with each of the 50 states as they may be members of nations, tribes or bands that have sovereignty and treaty rights upon which federal law secures. Often these laws, procedures and policies impact effective tribal-state relationships. These relationships are essential to building partnerships, alliances and long-term relations that impact our visitors and all the people we serve in America’s State Parks. In this webinar we’ll talk about treaty rights, laws, and requirements, but just as important we’ll talk about the benefits of intergovernmental coordination and collaborative problem solving. This is the first step in recognizing many common interests, from legal obligations to interpretation and visitor services to the stewardship of the special lands under our care.

Dorothy FireCloud, Native American Affairs Liaison and Assistant to the Director of the National Park Service will be our guest presenter for this important discussion. Additionally, representatives from two state park systems will discuss their work and relations with respective tribes in their jurisdictions.

You must register in advance for this webinar. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

For the first time in our history, we have five different generations all working in the same workplace. Each brings its assets and its liabilities. As leaders of America’s State Parks what should you expect, what do your future employees expect, how do we adjust to a changing work environment, stay relevant and move our organization forward with the mission of state parks?

Dr. Lauren Duffy, Associate Professor at Clemson University will discuss the everchanging work force and the expectations of the next generation of park leaders, and how it may be necessary for current leaders to adjust and adapt to recruit and retain employees.
