2023 ASSPD Recap

May 3, 2024

As the host state for the 2023 Association of Southeastern State Park Director's Conference (ASSPD), we wanted attendees to experience diverse offerings of the Louisiana State Parks. From the pine forests of Washington Parish to the historic treasures of the Feliciana’s and the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana is rich in natural beauty, culture, and history.

Highlights of the 2023 ASSPD Conference included carefully crafted excursions and experiences at state parks, historic sites, and the French Quarter.

The first stop was – the crown jewel of the Louisiana State Parks system; Bogue Chitto State Park in Franklinton. Attendees experienced one of the most dynamic natural habitats in Louisiana, including a scenic river system and an array of activities. From mountain biking and hiking to disc golf and fishing, our colleagues had an opportunity to choose their own adventure in this exceptional park.

On day two of the conference, guests were treated to a trio of historic treasures including: Port Hudson State Historic Site–scene of the longest siege in U.S. military history, Audubon State Historic Site featuring Oakley House, a plantation home where the famous naturalist John James Audubon once worked as a tutor, and Rosedown State Historic Site home to 13 historic buildings and meticulously maintained gardens where dinner was served under lighted oaks.

The final day included a visit to one of the oldest and most picturesque parks in our system: Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville. Then, the group traveled to Bayou Segnette State Park where attendees were offered freshly shucked St. Bernard Parish oysters, tours of our floating cabins, and an airboat swamp excursion. No trip to Louisiana would be complete without a visit to the New Orleans’ French Quarter. A local jazz band greeted attendees and led a second line through Jackson Square to the Cabildo–site of the Louisiana Purchase transfer ceremonies in 1803 and one of Louisiana’s most significant historic buildings. Guests enjoyed tours of the Cabildo, dinner provided by Brennan’s (a world-famous New Orleans restaurant), and exploring the French Quarter.
