Job Responsibilities

Debates swirled around slavery and divided the nation during William Henry Gist’s term as governor of South Carolina (1858-1860). These debates reached a turning point with anti-slavery presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln’s election, causing Governor Gist to declare: “The only alternative left, in my judgment, is the secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union.” Today, Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site is a place to learn about important themes and key events in South Carolina’s history: the cotton boom and its collapse, secession and Civil War, slavery and sharecropping, emancipation and the fight for civil rights and Reconstruction and its violent overthrow. The site provides visitors with opportunities to discover these significant stories through the perspectives of people who lived at Rose Hill, including William Henry Gist and his family, enslaved people, freedpeople and tenant farmers.


Job Purpose and Duties:

Responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of Rosehill Plantation State Historic Site. This position performs diversified duties as governed by general instruction, policies, and standard operating procedures of the department. The park manager will support the regional chief as needed.

1) Effectively train and supervise full-time staff and direct activities of seasonal employees.
2) Protect, preserve, and enhance the site's cultural and natural resources in a manner consistent with department policies. Consults with regional chief and central office staff before carrying out any rehabilitation work, other than routine maintenance on historic buildings, structures and landscapes.
3) Develop, update, and implement resource management plans consistent with department policy and the site's mission.
4) Assure that all facilities, equipment and property including historic resources are maintained to the standards set forth by the department. Work to provide a safe environment for park visitors and employees.
5) Perform all required administrative functions to include: inventory, revenue collection, property accountability, accurate and timely reporting in accordance with departmental policy and procedures.
6) Build positive public relations with visitors and local residents. Assure that all interpretive and educational activities are conducted in accordance with established department policies and the site's mission.
7) Develops and implement marketing strategies.
8) Practice and promote teamwork within the S.C. State Parks and Rose Hill Plantation SHS, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represents office as an active member on agency teams assigned throughout the year.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Bachelor Degree in park administration or a related field with two (2) years of experience in park administration and operation in a managerial or supervisory capacity; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements:

1) Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work flexible schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays.
2) Position requires residency in agency-provided housing.
3) Requires medium to heavy lifting, walking, and standing on uneven terrain. Accurate and timely completion of all park related administrative functions. Encouragement of public support for state parks through programs, civic contributions, and central office support.
4) Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license. May require completion of law enforcement training as prescribed by state law.
