Position Overview:

Located on the shores of Lake Vermilion in Soudan, Minnesota, Lake Vermilion – Soudan Underground Mine State Park offers a unique blend of Minnesota’s newest State Park and Minnesota’s only historic underground mine. At Lake Vermilion State Park, development continues as plans to develop the next phase of campgrounds and trails. Lake Vermilion State Park has also opened 8 new camper cabins, one island cabin, a campground and group camps. The day use area and public water access is incredibly popular and the fishing couldn’t be better. Soudan Underground Mine State Park is a unique challenge. As a National Historic Register Landmark, the park offers visitors a unique view of history with its amazing interpretive programming and tours. Soudan Underground Mine also has a crew that is technically diverse in their expertise to ensure that underground tours and infrastructure are maintained at the highest level.

Park supervisors are involved in every aspect of these two very different operation and no two days are ever the same. Ongoing development at Lake Vermilion and the complexity of maintaining and managing an underground mine mean that Park supervisors must be experienced in supervising a staff with unique skills and diverse backgrounds, managing a large and complex budget, project management and providing high quality customer experiences.

Current Announcement:

Salary Range: $29.01 – $42.00/Hourly, $60,573 - $87,696/annually

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Natural Resources Management, Parks and Recreation, Natural Science, Communications, public relations, business management, political science, public administration, social science or closely related field and TWO YEARS professional level experience in a natural resources setting, agency or organization; including budget development and fiscal management, work planning and partnership and visitor management experience and TWO YEARS of supervisory or professional lead work experience in a governmental agency; or in a natural resource setting, organization or agency.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with complex water and sewer systems.
  • Two or more years managing budgets.
  • Two or more years in facilities management.
  • Two or more years of direct supervisory experience. (including lead worker and work out of class experience) training coordinating, and directing other staff, volunteers, or others on resource or recreation projects.

Physical Requirements:

Requires occasionally lifting articles such as 50 pounds maximum and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License with a clear driving record. It is policy of the Department of the Natural Resources that all candidates submit to a background check prior to employment. The background check may consist of the following components:
