Job Responsibilities

Set along the South Edisto River, Aiken State Park is a haven for fishing, canoeing and kayaking. A scenic 1.7-mile canoe and kayak trail winds its way down the south fork of the Edisto River, attracting paddlers from across the region.

Aiken State Park has a history as notable as its natural beauty. During the Great Depression, the park was built by two Civilian Conservation Corps companies, one of which was an African-American detachment of the C.C.C. Their work has withstood the test of time and can still be seen in some of the remaining structures and interpretive signage.


Job Purpose and Duties:

To oversee all aspects of a State Park to include but not limited to the administrative duties, operations, staffing, maintenance, revenue, resource management and other aspect of the park. To direct a staff in the day to day business of a park and in the planning of the future for the park.

1) Effectively trains and supervises full-time staff and directs the activities of seasonal employees.
2) Responsible for change funds, revenues collected, receipts and their accountability and disposition. Perform all required administrative functions to include providing accurate and timely reports in accordance with Departmental policy and procedures.
3) Improve management skills and professional development.
4) Assures that all facilities, equipment, and property is maintained to the standards set forth by the Department. Works to provide a safe environment for park visitors and employees. Maintains and is accountable for inventory of all assets.
5) Employee will be required to live in designated park housing to provide for security, safety and emergency response.
6) Ensures that park operations are operated in the most cost efficient manner possible. Assures that all activities are conducted in accordance with established procedures and policies.
7) Performs continued public relation activities, educational and recreational activities as required. Enforces park rules, regulations and policies within his/her authority.
8) Works effectively with Resource Management to manage the cultural and natural resources of the park to include ponds, trails, artesian wells and other CCC structures.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Bachelors degree in Park Administration or related field with one year experience in park operations.

Additional Requirements:

1) Use judgement and discretion in the decision making process based on established procedures and guidelines. Provide a customer friendly service oriented work environment. Experience supervising full time employees and in customer relations. Able to make public presentation and represent the park and the agency to the public and the press. Ability to work a flexible work schedule including nights, weekends and holidays. Position requires residency in agency provided housing.
2) The ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. The ability to work independently or as part of a team as well as the ability to direct others.
3) Must possess a valid SC drivers license.

Job Responsibilities

Cheraw State Park takes traditional recreational park activities to a new level of fun. The 18-hole, championship Cheraw State Park Golf Course winds its way through piney woodlands while maintaining and protecting the surrounding natural habitat of the park.

Cypress wetlands line Lake Juniper and can be explored by kayaks and canoes or via a boardwalk that runs along the lake. Try fishing from the boardwalk or by boat, or take time to explore other areas of Cheraw on the park’s extensive biking and hiking trails.

Job Purpose and Duties:

Under general supervision, assists with overall operation and maintenance of a State Park. Performs diversified duties as governed by general instruction, policies and standard operating procedures of the Department. Assumes the responsibilities of the Park Manager in the absence of higher level employees.

1) Assists with park administrative duties in accordance with Department guidelines and procedures and planning of long and short-term goals.
2) Collect and account for revenue and produce required reports.
3) Instruct, supervise and perform routine and preventative maintenance on grounds, buildings and equipment to meet established standards.
4) Manages assigned specific operations to include public use areas, retail operations and facilities.
5) Performs law enforcement activities within his/her authority and established policy and provides a safe environment for visitors and staff.
6) Assists in control of inventories of equipment and supplies by issue, use and counts; completes data reports.
7) Interprets the cultural and natural resources of the State Park Service to park visitors.
8) Employee will be required to live in designated park housing to provide for security, safety and emergency response.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State preferred qualifications: A high school diploma and experience as a handyman or park ranger. Agency preferred qualifications: Associate degree in Park Management or related field with two (2) years park ranger experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements:

1) Position requires medium to heavy lifting, walking and standing on uneven terrain, crawling and working at heights. Exposure to weather conditions, cleaning agents and other material used in maintaining park facilities and grounds. Position works a flexible work schedule, including weekends and holidays. Position requires residence in agency-provided housing.
2) State preferred qualifications: Knowledge of park policies and regulations. Skill in the use of equipment necessary for maintenance activities. Ability to prepare reports and schedules. Ability to supervise and train subordinates. Agency preferred qualifications: Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
